Annual Report Unprecedented, challenging, disruptive. These words ring true for many organizations and EAGE is no exception. Disruption can also be an opportunity, as one will be able to see when looking back at our activities in 2020 Keep Going We hope you will join us as we recall an unforgettable year! 2020 MEMBERSHIP In 2020, the way our community connected changed significantly. Where previously in-person meetings played a central role, this was much reduced after mid-March 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic accelerated our online connection with the EAGE membership – building on our earlier experiences with online conferencing, community building and online education. With members active in over 118 countries, we are a truly global association and well positioned for the challenges ahead! 35 workshops and conferences in 2020 Community Our members are more than just statistics though; they are also a community. And our community is always growing, sometimes with whole new groups. In 2020 our network of Local Chapters, Student Chapters and Special interest Communities welcomed three new technical groups: The Hydrogeophysics Community The Mineral Exploration Geophysics Community The Basin & Petroleum Systems Analysis Community SUCCESS STORIES Here are some of the success stories from 2020 from our regions and departments. These success stories reflect our meetings, big and small, and examplify some of the diversity and resilience that lies at the heart of our multi-disciplinary association. 2020 saw a fantastic start as EAGE Asia Pacific with AAPG hosted the First Petroleum Geoscience Conference in Papua New Guinea in 20 years! The conference featured exciting new discoveries on PNG’s complex geology with much new information to be shared from a period during which technology and techniques have leapt forward. As the statistics show, it was a diverse group of attendees from corporates, academics, government to students – this event is all geoscientists or one genre or another; this event is all about sharing our science. Delegates were very enthusiastic and looking toward the next edition slated for 2022. Following the conference, the pandemic had forced us to adopt virtual models. The team had taken the shift in their stride and transitioned the EAGE Digital Subsurface and 3rd Near Surface Conferences to virtual deliveries successfully. The conferences were well received and attended by over 100 delegates globally. The region is optimistic that 2021 will bring key events despite the new landscape in meetings to continue on the mission of enriching the industry. Asia Pacific 2020 was an exciting year in which we launched two new flagship events, EAGE Digital 2020 and EAGE GET2020, tackling the digital and energy transitions respectively. The two conferences were both held online and proved to be enormously successful. We expect continued interest as these two themes continue to dominate the future of sustainable energy development in Europe. Another new entrant to the calendar included the First EAGE Conference on Seismic Inversion. The high level of support for the event reflected the growing interest that this topic has gained in the geophysical community. The online event also included many engaging talks including a webinar on Seismic Inversion in a Net Zero Carbon world which explored future applications for the technology in a broader range of industries. Europe EAGE MEA Office kicked off 2020 with a bang, in the first two months we saw the return of some of the regions best workshops in Rock Physics and Naturally Fractured Reservoirs, EAGE’s President came to the region and along with our sister societies we brought IPTC to Saudi Arabia for the first time, which turned out to be the biggest IPTC since its inception. Soon after the pandemic hit, the team worked hard to transition many of the upcoming events to the new online format and received positive feedback for the EAGE Seabed Seismic Today: From Acquisition to Application and the First EAGE Workshop on Geothermal and Hydro Power in Africa. The region is looking strong for 2021 to bring some of the missed workshops in 2020 to life, either online, hybrid or as we all are excited about fully in person. Middle East & Africa Making our contribution count in Latin America. We have seen an ever-increasing interest in the services we provide in Latin America, the calendar of events planned for 2020 indicated that this is one of the current industry hotspots in the world. Virtuality allowed us to offer a big portfolio of workshops, interactive online short courses and conferences that were a highlight for our members in the region. We would like to mention three of them. The contribution of women in the field of geoscience was the main focus in the First EAGE Online Latin America Workshop: leaders, geologists and geoscientists shared knowledge and demonstrated the important role of women in the global industry. Machine Learning was key to keep aligned with the development of technologies in oil and gas and. Last but not least, the third edition of the EAGE/HGS Conference on Latin America, a great opportunity to expose the big potential of the region from north to south and from east to west. Latin America Our colleagues in Russia had some real excitement with events, and the numbers speak for themselves! RUSSIA & CIS EAGE 2020 Annual Conference & Exhibition Online 2020 has seen many drawbacks for the world and the oil & gas industry. However, it brought to light many opportunities as well. EAGE offered its members the first ever edition of the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition Online! Over 2,000 delegates rejoiced online for our flagship event. The essence of the traditional conference was maintained by organising a large Technical Programme with live Q&A sessions and an Online Exhibition where company representatives were present to interact with delegates and share their latest developments throughout the past year. The event programme saw the additional of a wide range of Community Activities dedicated not only to our large audience but also to students to help their career advancements. The extraordinary Opening Ceremony and the EAGE Forum Sessions featured key industry leaders that addressed the most critical aspects and current themes affecting the geosciences today. In short, the EAGE Annual Online kept the conversation going and offered a place for peers to rejoice and meet once again, though under a different format than normal. Local Chapters Local Chapters were active throughout 2020, helping members to stay connected and learn more about the opportunities offered by the Association. By converting their activities to new online formats, they were able to grow and activate new collaborations. In total 47 community events were organized, including Energy Transition in the North Sea – A Sea of Opportunities” (2 and 21 October 2020) involving 5 Local Chapters and the EAGE special interest community on Decarbonization & Energy Transition. Education Education is key to EAGE’s mission to promote the development and application of geosciences and engineering. Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, online education has seen enormous growth and hundreds of people have attended EAGE courses remotely thanks to our new online interactive formats. In 2020 we’ve been working on new developments to improve and expand the EAGE online educational offerings and launched the EAGE’s online education platform – Learning Geoscience! The new platform gives members the possibility to follow the latest education in geoscience and engineering remotely through an integrated set of interactive, or self paced, learning tools and online courses of experienced instructors from industry and academia, as well as free learning materials, including e-lectures and webinars. Students Our student activities overview in 2020 is one of interruption as well as innovation. With many of our programmes traditionally...
